蔓延防止措置が終わったタイミングで、今年最初の遠征に行ってきました。
昨年はたった2回に終わってしまったので、今年はもう少し行けたら良いのですが。。。
This is my first trip to the island this year, and I wish I will be able to visit more than last year...
シーズン前で予想通り鳥は少なく、この時期に予想される通りの鳥がいた印象でした。
ホオジロハクセキレイ、オス夏羽。
White Wagtail
M. a. leucopsis It is a minor race in Japan, but the one I had been expected in this early season there.
同個体。
舳倉島では毎シーズン見られますが、中でも綺麗な個体でした。
Same bird as above, that was a beautiful male summer.
一緒にいたホオジロハクセキレイ、メス夏羽。

M. a. leucopsis that was together with the male.
ムクドリの小群の中に、ホシムクドリが2羽いました。
冬羽から夏羽に換羽中で、嘴が黄色くなっていました。
There was a pair of European Starlings in a small flock of White-cheeked Starlings.
They are in moult to summer plumage at the moment.
ハチジョウツグミも時期的な予想通り複数いましたが、なかなか良い写真は撮れず。。。
I saw some Naumann's Thrushes around the island as I expected, but couldn't take any good photos...
路上にはミヤマホオジロが何度も出てきては採餌していました。

私は初めて気が付きましたが、舳倉島には迷ったレース鳩もよくやってくるようです。
昨年登録された足環を付けていましたが、無事に帰れるでしょうか。
This is my first time to see a racing pigeon there, but I heard they sometimes lose their way and show up in the island.
It's got a foot ring witch registered last year, and I wonder if it make it to the goal...
新日本海フェリーをバックに、ウミウ、ヒメウ、セグロカモメ、オオセグロカモメ、ウミネコ。

ウミスズメは合計100羽弱ほどで、この時期としては少ない印象でした。
I counted Ancient Murrelets slightly less than 100, and felt it's less than expectation in this season.
最後はオオミズナギドリ。
時間的な要因なのか、いつも復路の方が大きな群れが見られる気がします。
I don't know a certain reason why, a large flock of Streaked Shearwaters is usually seen on a return sea route.

I haven't been able to go to the island for long because of the COVID, so it was the second time in this year.
Now I hope this won't be the last, though it's a bit too late for autumn migration.
緊急事態宣言等の影響でなかなか遠征できませんでしたが、やっと今年2度目の舳倉島へ行ってきました。
The birds I saw on this day were all usual birds except this super yellow Masked Bunting.
I have never seen such a beautiful color aberration like this before.
渡りの最盛期を過ぎたこの日は普通種ばかりでしたが、突然現れたこのスーパーイエローのアオジには驚かされました。
羽毛、目、嘴、足の色から、アルビノや白変種ではなく、あくまで推測ですが、希釈遺伝子のイザベルタイプではないかと考えています。
Because the color of the eye, bill and legs looked pretty normal (or just a little bit paler), I thought it would be an example of leucism, not an albino.
But then a friend of mine Neil Davidson helped me to consider it to be an example of the isabel type of dilution, and now I agree with that.
That is a guess to the end, and it's very difficult (or sometimes impossible) to tell the real reason for the color aberrations, but very interesting to think about it.
とまぁ難しい話は置いといて、こんな美しい突然変異は初めて見ましたし、嬉しい出会いでした。

Japanese White-eyes are our very common birds, but not easy to take photographs.
If I could spend my time for this bird, it meant there were no good birds around.
メジロはたくさんいましたが、メジロの写真を撮ってるあたりが、他に良い鳥があまりいなかった証拠です・・・。

There were an adult and a young Rooks.
Young bird sometimes looks like Carrion Crow, but I've never seen Carrion in the island.
ミヤマガラスは2羽いました。
奥の若鳥が1羽でいるとハシボソガラスかと思う時がありますが、実際ハシボソガラスは舳倉島では見たことがありません。
Eastern Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon and Eurasian Kestrel were flying over the island, so that could be one reason for that I didn't see so many birds.

この日はノスリ、ハヤブサ、チョウゲンボウが頻繁に飛び回っていたので、それも小鳥が少なかった一つの理由かもしれません。
The last one is Flesh-footed Shearwater on the sea route, and I don't see this bird so often.
The last time I saw it was on 6th November 2018, so it should be the right time for it.
最後は航路でのアカアシミズナギドリ。
舳倉航路ではオオミズナギドリ以外は珍しく、アカアシミズナギドリを前回見たのは2018年11月6日だったので、ちょうど現れやすいタイミングだったのかもしれません。

今年も何度通えるか分かりませんが、第一回目の遠征に行ってきました。
3月はまだ観光用に宿が開かれないため宿泊はできず、希海の就航以来3月の復路の時間も1時間早くなってしまったため、バードウォッチングに関しては非常に厳しいシーズンです。
I made a first visit of this year to the island on 11th of March.
March is a pretty much hard season for birders, because Minshuku is not open for tourists until April and the ferry schedule had been changed since they got the new boat so that the staying time got one hour less.
早春の定番、ヤツガシラが1羽いました。
島民情報では2月頭からいたとのことですが、島民が島に戻るのが2月頭なので、仮に同一個体がそれより前からいたとするならばほぼ越冬と呼べそうな気がします。
I saw a Hoopoe as usual early spring.
It's a pretty rare migratory bird in Japan, but an islander said it had been staying since the beginning of February.
Then, all islanders are out of the island on January and get back around the beginning of February, so if the same bird had been staying since January, we could be able to say it's wintering.
ハチジョウツグミは3回見ましたが、全然いい所に出てきませんでした。
A Naumann's Thrush appeared three times.
However, it's always bad place to photograph.
竜神池にはホシハジロのオスが1羽いました。
There is a Common Pochard on Ryujin Pond.
オオヒシクイも1羽で、島中を飛んだり降りたり、うろうろしてました。
今まで島でマガンは何度か見ていますが、オオヒシクイは初めて見ました。
A Taiga Bean Goose was hanging around the island.
I have seen Greater White-fronted Goose a couple of times, but it was my first time to see TBG there.
この時期、やはり島の鳥は少なかったですが、海上はウミスズメたちで盛り上がってました。
The island was pretty quiet as I could expect, but there were a lot of Ancient Murrelets along the sea route.

A bird got so close to the boat, which is now molting from winter to summer.
こちらはウトウの群れ。
ウミスズメほどではありませんが、複数見られました。
A flock of Rhinoceros Auklets.
They were not as many as Ancient, but there were plenty.

前回の遠征の翌日から数日間に野鳥の種類も数も増え、希少種も観察されていました。
そして今回は、前日までがとても良い状況だったとのこと。。。
この秋は複数回遠征しましたが、なかなか良い日には巡り合わないものです。
I heard it had been a very good situation for a few days after my last visit, and the previous day of this time was very good again...
It's pretty difficult to have a good day even though I visit several times a year.
前回は1羽だけでしたが、寒い時期に多いミヤマホオジロは今回たくさん見られました。
オス第一回冬羽。
Male 1st winter Elegant Bunting which is a very popular bird in late autumn in the island.
I saw only one last time, but there were a lot this time.
ジョウビタキも増えていましたが、この前日にはなんと約300羽いたそうです。
オス成鳥。

It was increased as well, but I heard there were roughly 300 on the previous day...
ノビタキ第一回冬羽。
メスに見えますが、耳羽と頭部の縦斑が普通のメスよりも黒いので、オスの可能性もあるかと思っている個体。
1st winter Stejneger's Stonechat.
It looks like female, but its ear-coverts and crown-stripes are a bit blacker than usual female, so I think it's possible to be male.
キクイタダキはたくさんいました。
たくさんいても写真を撮るのが難しい鳥ですが、なんとも可愛く撮れた一枚。
Female Goldcrest.
There were plenty of them, but this small and quick bird is always difficult to take a photo.
鳥の減ったこの日は、舳倉島らしい鳥はあまり見られませんでした。
海岸にいたタヒバリ冬羽。
Buff-bellied Pipit which is one of the most common pipits in Japan.
I couldn't see so many island tick birds this time.
チョウゲンボウが、この日多かったマヒワを食べていました。
メス若鳥。
Female juvenile Eurasian Kestrel.
It had just hunted an Eurasian Siskin in the port.
食べ終わって飛び立った同個体。
Same bird took off after finished it.
ハイタカも最低2羽いました。
この個体は若鳥ですが、下面のオレンジが強いタイプなのでオスかもしれません。
There were at least 2 Eurasian Sparrowhawks.
This bird was juvenile and could be a male, because the orange color was much stronger than usual.
別個体のハイタカ、メス成鳥。
この日は何度も先ほどのチョウゲンボウと空中でけんかしていました。

前回の遠征はシーズン前で鳥が少なく、今回は既に夏鳥の渡りが終わった後でまた少し鳥が少なかったですが、冬鳥がちょうど到着し始めたタイミングでした。
The last visit was a bit too early for main migration, and this time, it was late for summer birds...
However, I could see some good winter birds that have just arrived.
今回見られたムシクイ類は、舳倉島で一番多く見られるオオムシクイのみでした。
Kamchatka Leaf was the only warbler I saw this time, which is the most common warbler in the island.
撮影後すぐに飛び去りましたが、珍しく電線にとまっていたのはツツドリの若鳥でした。

It's unusual for it to perch on wire in the open like this, though it's gone soon after I found it.
ミヤマガラス成鳥。
普段は舳倉島にも複数から少数の群れで渡ってきますが、この個体は単独で滞在していたようです。
Basically, Rooks are making flocks while they are in Japan, but this bird looked like staying alone.
舳倉島では毎シーズン見られるムネアカタヒバリ。
この日は港に若鳥が3羽いました。
I saw 3 juvenile Red-throated Pipits in the port.
We can see them every migratory season in the island, but they are pretty rare birds in the mainland.
こちらも、舳倉島ではよく見られるコホオアカ。
若鳥。この日もホオアカより多く見られました。

It is also a rare bird in the mainland, but it's a kind of usual bird in the island.
最後はシラガホオジロ。
メス若鳥だったためかなり地味でしたが、十分嬉しい出会いでした。
The best one was this female juvenile Pine Bunting.
It was not gorgeous like male adult, but good enough for me to see.
